I’ve written about a lot of cat scratchers that are $30, $60 even $100 or more. When you’re making a larger investment, it’s nice to find products that combine multiple functions in one, especially if it involves functions for both cats and humans. So I looked around for some stylish ottomans that cats would like to scratch on, but that are also affordable enough so it won’t be a heartbreak when it’s time to replace them. I found several different textures that would be appealing to cats, plus most of these also have storage space inside! All under $100 and most under $50.
- Sisal Upholstered Storage Ottoman from Sauder $31.49
- 15″ Cube Storage Ottoman in Light Grey Fabric from Songmics $27.99
- Microsuede Storage Ottoman in Lime Green (other colors available) from The FHE Group $29.99
- Storage Cube/Ottoman in Charcoal Grey Fabric from Seville Classics $24.99
- Hand Knit Cable Style Pouf made with Cotton Braided Cord from Cotton Craft $59.99
- Bulrush Weave Storage Ottoman with Faux Leather Lid from Joveco $69.99
- Rush Grass Storage Footstool from Oriental Furniture $70.99
- Microsuede Folding Storage Ottoman from Casual Home $23.99
- Light Grey Linen Upholstered Storage Ottoman from Sauder $25.19
Those are all really nice!
They are beautiful… my cat has devastated the faux leather storage ottoman I use for a coffee table… might have to consider replacing it with something like the ones you located. Then it’s on to getting a replacement for the $50 sofa I found. Thanks very much!
I don’t know about others’ experience, but all of my cats have learned what it’s okay to scratch on, and what’s NOT okay. Still, I would think these ottomans, cool as they are, would confuse cats as to why they can scratch *this* ottoman/piece of furniture, but not another that may look similar…maybe a more expensive
people ottoman/end of the sofa/chair leg/etc.
It’s kind of the same idea as to why those cute cat toys that are a glove with elongated fingers, sometimes with little bells/feathers/etc attached to the tips…a cat can attack/bite/scratch/bunnykick *that* “hand”, but not their guardian’s bare hand.
I know cats are intelligent creatures, but those distinctions, I believe, may be out of their wheelhouse.
That said, these are really great looking…
My cat was a stray at 6 months when I got her and it’s been hard to break her of the habit of scratching on certain things. I have 5 different kinds of scratching things for her, but she still will go for my leather ottoman.
Wow…..thank you for article. I have seven rescue cats and have resorted to the fact that my apartment will just look like a dump. I can’t keep up replacing stuff. Since I am gone at work, there is no way to enforce them to NOT scratch certain items despite that fact I have scratchers and cat trees.
These are all beautiful.
I can vouch for the fact that my cats would definitely scratch on all of these. It’s the texture. The only piece of my furniture they scratch on and damage is my desk chair. It is a looser-weave fabric similar to these fabrics. I knew when I bought it on sale that my cat would find it too tempting, and indeed she did. My cats do “scratch” on my couch and living room chairs, both cotton canvas, and the surround of my bed base, slightly textured fabrics, but because they are more smooth, the cats don’t actually scratch them. They go through the motions. I hear the “tick tick tick” of little claws, yet I see zero damage. Not sure how they do that. Somehow they know the difference. My chair isn’t so lucky. That one is highly textured and now awfully shredded. I still don’t mind. I bought it as “our” chair, for me to sit on and them to scratch. I think it’s adorable the way they climb up the back of it to look over my shoulder when I work at my desk. I’ll eventually cover it.
