This litter box isn’t as stylish as others that we feature on Hauspanther, but the pure functionality has me giddy! This is the Feline Pine Self-cleaning Litter Box, and it is fabulous! I’ve been wanting to try this out for a while now, so the company sent me one to test, and I’m hooked. I’ve used pine pellet cat litter in the past, but I was always frustrated because as the pellets breakdown into sawdust, the whole box becomes a mess and the sawdust tracks all over the place, then you wind up throwing out good pellets when you dump the whole thing. Ugh!
The Feline Pine Self-cleaning Litter Box takes care of all those issues. It’s a 2-part box, as you can see above. The top compartment has a slotted bottom, allowing the sawdust to fall into the bottom tray. You simply scoop solids from the top, add a few more pellets, and dump the sawdust out of the lower tray as needed. Brilliant!
This litter box can be used with Feline Pine pellets or any other pine pellet cat litter, or wood stove pellets work great, too.

Another useful alternative that I’m sure will be welcomed by those who use this type of litter!
I love the one that you tip to one side and then pull the drawer out and empty it into the garbage. No having to scoop the litter or empty the litter box into a bag and make a mess all over the floor. Neat clean and simple!. Omega Paw roll n clean
How is cleaning this box? Because it has two pieces, it seems like it might be double the work.
I love Feline Pine litter AND litter box. There is absolutely no litter box smell!
I’ve been using this litterbox for a few months now and it ROCKS! it also makes scooping litter more fun cause you can pretend you are in the California gold rush.
I use this since 1,5 years now and it’s really good. I have less costs and my two cats used it right from the beginning. One of the big advantages of this kind of cat toilet is that my appartement is finally litter-free!
How does this work with MULTIPLE (7) cats??? We use 3-4 boxes w/good quality scoop litter and have to clean daily – plus empty and wash at least every 10 days. Lots of work as we are old – and the scoop stuff is very heavy
I will do my best to answer your question. (We have been using it for our 2 cats, so I can speak only from my experience and guess how you will apply to your situation.)
You will still want to use the same number of boxes. You will still clean the poo out daily. You will NOT have to scoop ‘urine balls’ You WILL INSTEAD stir a bit and shake (back and forth on the ground, you don’t have to pick it up) the ‘sawdust’ goes down to the lower level. You will need to empty the sawdust from the lower level (for my 2 cats, it’s once every 6 or so days) The website has a video you can watch. Since buying the box, the scoop and the litter can set you backa few pennies, maybe just try replacing one at a time and see how it goes? I think you will LOVE how light weight and easy it is! (and not so dusty!)
Good luck!
The trick with this terrific box is to use a plastic liner on the bottom portion of it to catch the sawdust. Then you just change the liner quite mess-free once a week. I also put some newspaper on the bottom of the box, underneath the liner but this isn’t necessary. I’ve been using it for years for our multiple cat household, and putting the boxes in the big plastic trays you put underneath washing machines (available at Home Depot, etc.). It has made life so much easier!
I bought a different brands version of this and was dissappointed at how many pellets still fell through.. this is the litter I most want to use and if this works I will be sold..not if I could just get my cats who like clumping clay sold!
Considering we have not only five huge plastic drifts in our oceans, but an island of plastic as well, using more plastic to line a litter box is not a good alternative.
Does this box have a top or will one bought at a retail store fit it?
I have 2 of these, and it works really well for pine pellet litter. With my crew I usually empty the bottom every 3-4 days, but I shake them down 1-2 times a day. I flush the poop down the toilet. I do have other litter boxes too since 2 would not be enough for our 12 kitties.
I use this great system, and I line the bottom box just to make it easier. When it’s time to clean, I just lift the liner out and put another one in. The liner is on the bottom, so it doesn’t disturb the cat’s activity.
A couple notes: bad to flush kitty waste for toxoplasmosis in the oceans reasons.
As for a covered box, we bought two boxes- a standard covered box and one other tray that fit within the covered one with some space between the two. We drilled holes just smaller than the pellets in the top box, and voila – home made feline pine box

I will say that there is no dust (which was my least favorite part of clay litter) no perfume (so poo still can have some poo smell) and no amonia cat urine smell! You can use a scoop with every other tine cut out to make it so that the poo stays in the scoop and the pellets fall back through. We shake and shimmy and sift the sawdust through to the bottom and every couple of days we empty the bottom. We always leave a couple fresh pellets in there after emptying to avoid any sticking and have not needed to use a liner of any sort. It is cheaper, better for the environment, smells like fresh pine (reminds me of a fresh horse stall which I have positive associations with).
Very pleased- remember to buy the original formula- not the clumping one!
We haven’t had much tracking problems either- I use a litter mat and an old shag bathmat to catch any sawdust off paws.
I have used the box with pellets for years and I really like ‘em. I have 2 adult cats and foster kittens so I have anywhere from 1 to 3 boxes out at any time. Since it’s pine, it’s light – unless you leave it to fill up with urine.
To start, put a scoop of pellets at the bottom to help absorb the urine that flows through.
Remove solids and then shake and stir each day to help the pine dust go through the mesh – this is important as it helps to keep saw dust tracking and smell to a minimum – shake & stir.
Once the bottom fills up (I do it once a week with 2 cats – more often when I have boarders) Lift the top and empty the pine dust in a corner of your garden that you’ve given over to weeds and natural cover – boy does it make those weeds grow.
I got 3 of the Feline Pine Litter Boxes… allhough they are smaller, lucky for me they fit perfectly inside my old ones.. so I have a box in a box, and so the original lids still fit…The cats don’t notice any difference, and I am also ‘giddy’ at the time this saves me, and the litter it will save by not having to throw out good litter with bad. Thanks for reviewing this box Kate! I am a pellet fan, and a Feline Pine Litter box fan…. PS .. I actually use Blue pellets because I prefer the walnut smell to the pine, the boxes work fine for that brand as well.
Ooo! Good to know! I’ll have to try it with the Blue pellets. Thanks!
After reading the reviews I thought I’d give it a try, I was just SICK and tired of the dust/perfume (daughter has asthma) and grit (new vinyl floors) of the clumping litter (and it’s HEAVY!)
I’m a skeptical person…I went ahead a purchased it, had it for just over 2 weeks now and can say WE WILL NEVER GO BACK!
I initially tossed a few handfuls of the pellets on top of the scoop litter (in their old box) so as not to freak them out for the switch (I also had an open container in their litter area (under our kitchen sink) so they could get used to the smell (very mild ‘wood’ smell.) After a day or so I went ahead and made the switch. For the first 2 weeks I placed their old lid/cover on top of the new box (it didn’t really fit/latch) I had just removed the cover (it was get knocked all wonky) and they seem to be fine – more importantly – I don’t seem to have a mess! The pellets are bigger/heavier then the scoopable grit and doesn’t seem to fly about/scatter. The few pellets that have found their way out of the box are easy to toss back in.
This has solved ALL of my issues:1. no more ‘grit’ damaging my floors. 2. no more dust irritating my daughter (or the cats!) 3. Much easier to clean! 4. better for the environment 5. lighter weight 6. cheaper! (I’m going to get equine pine next time I need to buy as it’s even better priced.)
If people sound ‘over the moon’ for this product –there is a reason! LOVE IT!
I love Feline Pine because it is the one kitty litter I found that lists all the ingredients. It is only pine, no additives. This is important because I compost it in my yard. I bury the solids and then toss the litter under plants. The problem was that the used litter is lightweight and was tracking all over the house. This litter box eliminated 90% percent of the tracking. I am thrilled.
This looks like a great product and I’d love to try it but….$21.99 plus $12 shipping!!! That sounds outragous.
I really wish they would have local distributors. I could justify paying $21.99, and I understand why the shipping is high but would rather buy locally.
Any idea if they plan on mass marketing these litterboxes? I have 8 cats and two fosters so would like to switch totally to pine but it right now it is cost prohibative.
