The Cat Library

January 6, 2013 by hauspanther 19 Comments

The Cat Library

Belgian designer Corentin Dombrecht obviously paid close attention to cat behavior when he created this modular bookshelf that accommodates both books and cats. The system is based on three different modules and, depending on how you stack them, you can create little stairways for kitty to climb among the books all the way to the top where there is a built-in cat bed. Brilliant!

The Cat Library

The stairway can run along the front of the bookshelf or it can be hidden behind the books against the wall. There are two styles of bed on the top: raised or sunken.

The Cat Library

It looks like this is just a design concept that isn’t available for sale anywhere yet, but I think it’s a terrific idea! Check out the video below to see the Cat Library in action.

I’m with Jennifer- this would be a tremendous joy in my life. I may ask a carpenter to give me a quote how much he would charge to build this.

I can figure something simple enough for me to attempt, between Home Depot and Ikea. Great Ideas, keep them coming. Thank you for all the inspiration.

Didn’t Albert Schweitzer say something about there being two refuges from the miseries of life: cats and music? Well, I’m pretty sure he would have added books to that if he’d thought about it. This is a wonderful idea!

I asked the kitties here and they just stared…wondering with their outside voices why we don’t have this bookcase now!

I would love to buy something like this, too. Is it possible to contact the designer for plans or to see if they are available?

Before i blew the photo op, I thought this might be a standard cube style shelf unit ( like sold at Ikea) covered in an outdoor carpet. That would be more do it yourself than this, as this is a farily advanced carpentry project.

It would also depend on one’s cat, which method would appeal. I have four cats. My smallest would love something she can climb like a tree. We’ve just bought her a piece of pvc sewer pipe and some outdoor carpet to make a ‘tree’ with. Only she and one other of my cats would like either version.

Is the available to purchase? My kitties would love it and I would have more storage space for my books!

I’ve just found my summer project. If you can do 45-degree mitre cuts with a table saw, this looks fairly reasonable (and that’s getting fancy).
