A cat scratcher doesn’t have to be something you tuck into a corner and hope no one notices. In fact, some of the best scratchers can become part of the design of a room.
These two wall-mounted scratchers from Mau take that idea in two very different directions. Why Wall-Mounted Scratchers Work
Scratching is an important everyday behavior for cats. A good scratching setup gives them an appropriate place to stretch, maintain their claws and leave visual and scent marks.
And placement matters. Rather than hiding a scratcher in an unused corner, consider putting scratching surfaces where your cat naturally wants to use them, such as near sleeping areas, along frequently traveled routes or close to furniture they already like to scratch.
Wall-mounted scratchers have another advantage: they make it possible to create a tall, stable vertical scratching surface without taking up valuable floor space. For cats who love a long, full-body stretch when they scratch, height is especially important.
These two designs from Mau make that functional surface something you’ll actually want to display.
Pietra: Scratcher as Sculpture
The Pietra Scratcher is particularly striking. Three large overlapping pebble-like shapes create an abstract wall sculpture, with contrasting oak and walnut finishes adding warmth and dimension.
The lowest section incorporates a sisal scratching panel measuring 16.25 inches wide by 26.5 inches high. Altogether, the composition measures 28 inches wide by 62.5 inches high, giving the piece a substantial architectural presence on the wall.
What we especially appreciate is that the sisal scratching pad is replaceable. Scratching surfaces are meant to be used, which means eventually they wear out. Being able to replace the working surface instead of discarding the entire piece makes much more sense for a piece of cat furniture designed to live in your home for years.
And because the scratching surface is incorporated into a much larger composition, Pietra demonstrates one of our favorite Catification tricks: instead of trying to disguise cat furniture, make it an intentional part of the room.
Canvas: Turn Scratching Into a Color Story
For a completely different look, there’s the Canvas Wall Scratcher. Canvas consists of individual MDF boards wrapped in jute rope that mount vertically on the wall. Each board measures 23.2 by 9.25 inches, and you can use up to three together to create a larger scratching installation.
The fun part is the color. Canvas currently comes in eight options, including neutrals like Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Jute and Off-White, earthy Moss, Sage and Rust, plus a wonderfully unexpected Hot Pink. Combine several colors for a graphic color-blocked installation, or keep everything monochromatic for a quieter look.
The individual panels can also be rearranged, so the composition isn’t necessarily permanent.
Even better, the scratching boards are double-sided. Once one side has been thoroughly enjoyed, remove the panel, flip it over and expose a fresh scratching surface. Replacement Canvas panels are also available when both sides eventually wear out.
That kind of modularity is exactly what we like to see in cat product design.
Choosing the Right Scratching Setup
Of course, even the most beautiful scratcher has to work for your cat. Pay attention to how your cat already scratches. Some cats prefer vertical surfaces, some prefer horizontal surfaces and others enjoy both. Look at the material they seek out, the locations they choose and how high they reach when stretching.
For a vertical scratcher, make sure the usable scratching area is tall enough and securely mounted so your cat can really lean into it without the surface shifting or wobbling. If your cat has already selected an undesirable scratching spot, such as the arm of the sofa, placing an appealing scratcher nearby can help give them a better option.
The goal isn’t simply to add a scratcher to the house. It’s to provide the right scratching surface in the right place.

Pietra and Canvas illustrate two very different ways to approach the same challenge. Pietra turns the scratching surface into part of a sophisticated sculptural composition, while Canvas celebrates it with color, texture and modularity.
