Very deep bookshelves often leave a lot of wasted space, but this brilliant Catification Hack makes use of that space to create a wonderful hidden climbing area for kitty! D de Jonge from The Netherlands sent in these photos. Look carefully, and you’ll see where the backs of the shelves have been cut away, creating a way for cats to climb vertically. Move all of the books and DVDs to the front of the shelf and your cat has a secret passage way to explore!
D reports that the cat hasn’t knocked the books off the shelf, but loves to climb to the top of the bookcase. I’d like to see a nice soft bed on the very top of the bookshelf to create a destination. What a perfect perch for kitty and a great use of wasted space!
That is way cool. I always thought that so much of the space in my bookcases was wasted. I never thought to make passageways for my cats–even though they’ve already shown me they like to climb in. I see a project in m future.

LOVE the pic of the tail! And that’s a great idea — with, as you suggested, the soft bed and maybe a catnip and catgrass station up there? Or maybe not?
I like the idea of it, but with my cats I would be picking up dvds daily, if not more often.
no worries. You can simply pack the books or dvds in tightly. Works great
GENIUS!
