The Litter-Robot is an automatic, self-cleaning litter box for cats that works much better than the raking type of automatic litter boxes. We’ve had our LitterRobot for about 4 years and I have been thrilled with the results.
We have an older (14 yrs) cat who’s gotten extremely picky about a clean box and would go outside the box it if wasn’t absolutely clean. This thing pretty much solved that problem. It’s used by 3 cats and can go almost a week before emptying.
Interesting post from Walter Bennett — I haven’t been sure about these, but from what he says, they must be pretty cat-friendly!
I’ve had a mixed experience with mine. My first one died after about a year, but I Bought a second one and it’s lasted a few years.
My issues are the dumping of clean litter (expensive litter too), sensitivity issues, and it’s a pain to clean.
I have it on the manual cycle since the sensitivity of it has been a problem, so once a day I go unplug and replug it back in. I’ve spoken to customer service and they’ve had no solution to fix the issue.
If something similar comes on the market, I’ll probably try it, but for now I’ll stick with my robot.
I completely agree with Walter Bonnett. I have had my litter robot for over 7 years. I have three cats and this box stays clean for almost a whole week. It is simple to empty with the pull out draw which is very large. You can easily line the drawer with a bag and therefore just pull out the bag when you empty it. I recommend this to all my cat friends. It also uses less litter over time. Because the robot empties soon after it is used, the litter clumps and then gets removed, so it doesn’t “spread”.
Looks like teletransportation of poop, lol.
A friend of mine bought it for his cats, but they wouldn’t use it, they were too scared by the noise!
What’s cleaning the inside of the globe like? While my kitty will definitely uses the litter box consistently… he tends to “spray” his currently enclosed box. I can detach the top, give it a good cleaning, and put it back together. Whats this one like?
We’ve had ours for about 6 years now, and I wouldn’t give it up for anything. Pulling the trigger to buy a several hundred dollar litterbox was VERY difficult, we talked it over several times, but when we finally went for it, it was because of the testimonials not just for the way it worked, but how many people claimed the customer service was so good. I hope they make this product forever because we’re NEVER giving it up! hah. As for our cats, well the first one was a stray and she was probably about 5 when we switched from a regular box to this one, within the first week she peed on the bed once and then never had a problem again. Our second cat took to it right away, he was rescued at about 4 months and has basically had this all his life. He’s a big boy, 14 pounds, sometimes he sits his butt into his pee, I think because he gets crowded in there, but 98% of the time it’s fine. Third cat is a rescue, came to us as a 10 or 11 year old. She took to it immediately (I was kind of surprised, I admit).
We always have a fresh brand new litterbox in the closet in case something goes wrong or someone is sick – after her operation, cat #3 couldn’t climb into the litter robot so we had a regular box for her while she was on the mend. Cat #2 had some diarrhea issues a few years back and kept climbing into the litter robot 100x an hour, setting it off and getting it stuck so again, we closed off the litter robot and gave him a regular box for a few days, everything turned out fine.
It’s worth noting that since it’s electric, you should be vigilant that when you have a power outage, unplug the box – when the power comes back on again, the globe will start to turn, woe betide if someone’s in there, they’ll have the bejesus startled out of them haha. I’m forever paranoid about the box getting stuck somehow, even after 6+ years of virtually foolproof operation. To that end we have a webcam in the litter room for when we go away for the weekend, and the neighbor has keys to the house. That being said, we have ZERO problems finding a cat sitter, since the biggest problem with cat sitters is finding someone willing to scoop, and that’s just not necessary even with 2 cats over a long weekend.
I empty the bag every 3-4 days, buy them in bulk at Costco. We go through FAR less litter than we used to. I scrub the globe down well with a bleach solution every 6 months or so. Best puchase ever. The best thing is that since the litter is always clean, I don’t think about it anymore when the cats jump on our bed or couch, I never think “ugh, they were just pawing through their own old poop”. LOVE IT.
We have 3 litter robots and most of our 17 cats love them. This makes litter cleaning so much betters. Esp when you have as many kitties as we do. We have had our robots for about 5 years now and can’t think abouts not having them.
Love, love, love my Litter Robot! When I first told people that I had bought one that thought I was crazy. But between the savings on the litter and savings of not having to clean the boxes twice a day I will praise this forevermore…
No matter what way you look at it, it’s a winner all the way around. I don’t know why more people don’t go out and get one. I’m not rich by any means, I’m on disability and I know it was expensive to start with, but I’ve saved that and much more with the litter that I don’t have to purchase and never mind having to carry up a flight of stairs.
Don’t hesitate, what do you have to lose but a smelly, having to clean all the time, litter box… 😉
I was given one as a gift last year and I love it. It’s kind of large, and I was initially thinking it would be kind of a pain to deal with, but it’s worked flawlessly. Cleaning the globe is probably a little more difficult than your standard litter box, but I take it outside and spray it down with a hose and it’s pretty much good to go. You also don’t need to clean it as often either, so it kind of evens out. If this one breaks down in the future, I’m pretty sure I’ll shell out the money for a new one.
Another note: You can actually buy the components separately, so if just one part of the LitterRobot breaks down (say, for instance, the circuitboard), you can actually just order a new part for it instead of buying an entirely new one. Haven’t had to try that out yet, but it’s nice to know it’s an option.
